Calvin Men's Basketball Tops Aquinas in Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team won its fourth game of the season as it took down Aquinas 90-72 at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament at Hope College on Friday evening. 

Calvin (4-1 overall) started out the game hot with its shooting as the Knights jumped out to a 17-10 lead after a layup by sophomore Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, IL / Huntley). Aquinas (6-4 overall) kept up with Calvin's scoring as it trailed 28-22 with ten minutes left in the half. The Knights quickly rattled off a 9-2 run capped off by a three-pointer by senior Alex Fruin (Beloit, WI / Turner) to give them a 39-25 lead. 

Calvin continued its hot shooting streak by going up 48-37 with a jumper by Luke Morrison (Bristol, IN / Northridge) with 3:23 left in the half. The Saint hung around for most of the half as the Knights took a 56-43 lead into halftime after a buzzer beater by Fruin. 

The Knights shot an impressive 22-34 (64.7%) from the field and 9-12 (75.0%) from three pointer in the first half. Calvin outrebounded Aquinas 12-11 and finished with 11 assists at halftime. 

Calvin picked up where it left off in the first half as it went on a 12-5 run finished off with a layup by Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). The Knights used the run to take a twenty-point lead with a score of 68-48. The Saints struggled shooting in the second half as the Knights continued to capitalize as they were leading 81-60 with 9:31 left in the game. 

Calvin maintained its lead over Aquinas the remainder of the game as the deficit was too large for the Saints to come back. The Knights took home the 90-72 win over the Saints and improve to 4-1 overall on the season. 

Calvin had three players score at least 20 points in the game. Shymanski led the team with 23 points as 16 of them came in the second half. Morrison finished with 22 points and Fruin ended the evening with 21 points and 4 assists. Egekeze also cracked double digits with 13 points. 

The Knights shot 33-62 (53.2%) from the field and 13-27 (48.1%) from three in the game. Calvin also shot 11-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line and finished with 16 assists.

UP NEXT: Calvin will take on Cornerstone at 6 p.m. tomorrow night in its second game of the GR Sports Hall of Fame Tournament.
