Calvin Women's Soccer Tripped up By Trine In Penalty Kicks in MIAA Tournament Semifinal

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, - The Calvin women's soccer team bowed out of the MIAA Tournament Tuesday night, dropping a penalty kick shootout to visiting Trine University 3-2 after the game ended in a 0-0 double-overtime tie.

Trine advances to the MIAA Tournament finals to face Hope.

As the MIAA Semifinal match began, Calvin (13-3-1) was having most of the early possession with some nice chances on net in the first half. In the first 15 minutes of the match, neither team was getting a quality look, but then the Knights started pick it up on the offensive end. Sophomore Roy Pruis (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had a great chance off a cross towards the box, but Trine goalkeeper Sophie Aschemeier came up to make the save.

A couple minutes later, Calvin had another golden opportunity as senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, MI / Plymouth Christian) hit a shot in the box, but again, Ashemeier made the save. The Thunder struggled to get possession on the Knights' side of the field as the Calvin defense was holding strong.

Sophomore Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) put a shot on net, but it just grazed over the top bar and the game was still tied. Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, IN / Lakeland Christian Academy) had the best chance in the half after a great cross from Karley Michmerhuizen (Hudsonville, MI / Unity Christian), but Trine's keeper was there to make the save again.

The Thunder only had one good opportunity before half on a corner, but Calvin's defense kicked the ball away. The game went into halftime with a score of 0-0.

The second half began with Paulson getting a break up the left wing, but her shot from a tight angle was stopped by Aschemeier . Shortly after, Calvin had some great touch passes in the box which resulted in a shot on goal with a kick from Sophie Mueller, but the shot was just high. Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont. / Toronto District Christian) had another breakaway chance through the right wing after a miss-handled ball from a Trine defender, but she missed the shot just wide.

Calvin continued to have more opportunities in the remainder of the second half and couldn't put one away, so the game headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, Trine had its best chances in the first couple minutes with two breakaways but Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, MI / Unity Christian) made a save on one and Trine just missed the outside corner on the other. Van Laare almost ended the game with a strike in the box, but Aschemeier made a fantastic diving save to keep the game going.

The second overtime began with Williams taking a shot from just outside the box that just went over the top. Hoekwater came up clutch for Calvin to keep the Knights in the game. Mueller had one last chance before the overtime ended, but it was saved by Trine's keeper again as the match headed to penalty kicks.

Calvin came up just short in penalty kicks with a score of 3-2 with Hoekwater making two saves and Trine's keeper making two as well. A missed penalty kick that sailed wide of the post by the Knights led to Trine winning the shootout and moving on the MIAA Championship.

COACHES COMMENT: "Really tough and disappointing result for our group tonight," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Trine made it very difficult for us to score, and we couldn't find a way to do that tonight."
