NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Calvin rolled to a 6-0 victory at Saint Mary's Saturday night to remain unbeaten in MIAA play.
Calvin (10-2-0 overall, 4-0-0 MIAA) scored three goals in each half to remain in a share of first place in the MIAA standings with Adrian.
The Knights put the pressure on early, ringing the woodwork and sailing a shot just over the bar. Calvin then broke through for the first goal in the 11th minute of play as sophomore Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) ripped a shot from the right wing that beat the Saint Mary's keeper with sophomore teammate Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian HS) then combined with Mueller to blast a shot from the the center of the box to give the Knights a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute of play.
Junior Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) then teamed up with juniors Karley Michmerhuizen (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and Kayla Beebe (Kalamazoo, Mich.) to give Calvin a 3-0 lead in the 35th minute of play with Michmerhuizen and Beebe drawing assists on the play.
Calvin maintained its 3-0 lead until late in the first half when the Knights broke through for another flurry of goals.
Sophomore Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) netted the first goal of her collegiate career, scoring in the 76th minute on a feed from senior Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Senior Hailey Niles (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga CC) scored an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.
Freshman Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) closed out the scoring, firing one in off a feed from Smith in the 88th minute.
Senior Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) went the first 72 minutes in goal for Calvin with freshman Emma Swain (Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) going the final 18 minutes in goal.
Calvin held a 26-3 shots at goal advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: " "I thought we came out with good focus today," said Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff. "It was really a full team effort. Getting results on the road is always tough in this conference so we're happy to come away with a win. Looking forward to getting back to work this week to prep for the second half of conference play."
NEXT UP: Calvin will now break until next Saturday when it travels to Trine for a 7 p.m. conference contest.
