Calvin Women's Volleyball Bounces Belles in Conference Match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's volleyball team got back into its winning ways as the Knights defeated St. Mary's in three sets in conference play on Tuesday in Van Noord Arena. 

The No. 6-ranked Knights jumped out to a huge lead in the first. They led 11-1 after a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian) and showed no signs of slowing down early. 

Later in the set, Calvin continued to add points to its lead including a kill by sophomore Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) to give the Knights a 19-10 lead. Calvin closed out the Belles in the first set with a score of 25-13 to take 1-0 lead in the match. 

Calvin continued to cruise in the second with Kelsey Smith (Vienna, VA / Madison) giving the Knights a nice kill and a 13-8 lead, but the Belles showed some fight late. St. Mary's started to get back into the game and made it a close contest by getting the score to 22-21. 

Calvin hung on to close Saint Mary's out however with help from a kill by Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) and a service ace by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). The Knights took set two with a score of 25-22 to gain a 2-0 lead in the contest. 

The Knights again gained an early lead in the third set of 10-3 over the Belles. St. Mary's struggled to score in the third set and Calvin overwhelmed the Belles with its offense. Calvin extended its lead to 16-4 after a kill by senior Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville). Calvin went on to close the set with a kill from Westra with a score of 25-20. 

Westra finished with 15 kills on 25 attacks to go with five service aces, five digs and three block assists. Bos finished with 9 kills on 16 attacks to go with three aces. Junior Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had a big performance with 19 assists, four service aces, nine digs and three block assists. Senior Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had 18 assists and four digs. 

The Knights improve to 18-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. 

COACHES COMMENTS: "Happy with the way we played considering we switched up the line up, "said Head Coach Amber Warners. "I thought we played hard and had a good team effort tonight." 

UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Albion for a conference match on Friday, October 8 for a 6:30 p.m. match.
