Calvin Men's Soccer Gets Tasty 2-0 Triumph Over Trine in Conference Opener

Box Score

ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin gained a tasty 2-0 victory at Trine University Tuesday night in the MIAA opener for both teams.

The Knights gained a pair of late first half goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the 24th minute, Calvin had appeared to score on a shot by junior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) on a shot that went over the goal line but slipped through a hole in the net. The shot was ruled to have entered the hole outside the goalmouth, instead changing the call to a corner kick.

Schau made no mistake 11 minutes later, blasting in an unassisted shot to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.

One minute later, the Knights struck again, as sophomore Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) hooked up with junior Seamus Kilgallon (Plainfield, Il./Wheaton Academy) for a score with Akintade scoring the goal and Kilgallon drawing the assist.

Calvin's defense was strong in the second half, limiting the host Thunder (5-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 MIAA) to five shots at goal.

Junior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was stellar in goal, making three saves in posting his sixth full shutout of the season.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was great to get a conference win on the road to start the MIAA campaign," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Credit to our guys who played through some things beyond their control tonight and found a way to get the three points. We'll enjoy it but look to quickly turn our attention to Adrian which is always a tough venue to play at."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Adrian on Saturday for a game scheduled to start at noon.
