HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team dropped a narrow 154-146 dual meet decision at rival Hope Saturday.
The meeting marked a matchup of nationally-ranked teams with Calvin ranked 24th and Hope ranked 17th.
The meet came down to the closing events. Hope held seal the win with a 1-3 finish in the 200 IM to gain an eight-point swing.
Sophomore Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) led Calvin with three individual victories, winning the 200 freestyle (1:56.77), 500 freestyle (5:18.94) and 100 freestyle (53.85). She was part of a 1-3 finish as senior Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was third (1:59.48).
The 200 butterfly featured a 1-2 Calvin finish with senior Grace Ann Delcompare (Naples, Fla./Home School) winning in 2:16.55 while junior Lydia Walls (Warren, Oh./Warren G. Harding HS) was second in 2:17.25.
Freshman Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) had a strong day, winning the 200 breaststroke (2:25.89) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.87) while taking second in the 200 IM (2:12.56).
Senior Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.91) and 200 breaststroke (2:34.96).
Calvin went 2-3 in the 50 freestyle with freshman Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) second (25.40) and junior Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) third (25.50).
Calvin received a second place swim from sophomore Lynda Steen (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:21.79).
Junior Claire Sytsma (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.26).
The one-meter diving competition was a strength for the Knights with sophomore Abigal Morse (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) second (220.65), freshman Natalie DuBois (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (214.45) and sophomore Hannah Biesbrock (Forest Hills, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) fourth (209.90). Biesbrock also placed second on the three-meter board (237.25).
Calvin had strong days in the relay races with Edewaard, Sydney Sonday, Farrell and Brown winning in a time of 3:40.74. Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Sytsma, Thier, Edewaard and Brown placed second in 1:49.63, finishing just behind Hope's winning time of 1:49.51, giving Hope a key seven-point swing early in the meet.
