GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Division II Grand Valley State defeated Division III Calvin 157-67 Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Grand Valley entered the meet ranked fifth in Division II while Calvin came in ranked 14th in Division III.
Saturday marked the dual meet opener for Calvin.
Calvin received a win from senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School) in the 50 freestyle, winning in a time of 21.09.
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Holstege, senior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Emil Friedman), senior Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) and junior Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) also won with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 1:21.93.
Heeres was third in the 200 freestyle (1:42.58) while sophomore Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Mn./Middleton HS) was third in the 100 butterfly (51.55).
Heeres placed second in the 100 freestyle (45.78) with Sparks third (46.51).
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Bryce Miner (Sunnyvale, Ca./Homestead HS) was second (1:01.23) and freshman Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Il./Home School) third (1:02.26).
Sophomore Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong day on the diving boards, taking third on the three-meter (234.45) and third on the one-meter (273.45).
NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it travels to rival Hope for a dual meet scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
