The Calvin women's volleyball team went undefeated in the Midwest Invitational this weekend by going 3-0 to improve to 24-2 overall. Calvin's final win of the weekend was a clean 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-13) sweep over Millikin on Saturday morning.
The first set of the match was a close contest at the start as they set was tied 11-11 after a kill by Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). The Knights started to get things rolling as they went on a 10-4 after an attack error by Millikin to give Calvin a 21-15 lead. Calvin never let the lead go and ran away with a set one win.
The Big Blue came into the second set with more energy. Millikin jumped out to a quick 15-11 lead over Calvin midway through the set. The Knights weren't going anywhere as they started to climb back into the set.
Calvin was trailing 20-16 before it won five straight points and another kill by Gabriella Kellogg gave them a 21-20 lead. Calvin got the lead to 24-23 and after a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils. IL / Timothy Christian), Calvin took set two with a score of 25-23.
Calvin had the momentum going in its favor and used it to jump out to an 11-6 lead after a kill by senior Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). The Knights started to get things rolling in the this set as they lead 20-11 after a block by Westra and Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, MI / Wyoming). Millikin had no answers for Calvin as the Knights took the final set of the match 25-13.
Westra finished the match with 13 kills and 29 team assists on the day and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) led the Knights with 18 digs while teammate Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) finished with 12 digs.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Very proud of our intensity and energy today against a scrappy Millikin team especially after an emotional two wins yesterday," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "This team is a joy to coach in seeing their unselfishness, joy for one another and their work ethic."
