Box Score ALMA, Mich. - Calvin women's soccer improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 4-1 win over Alma on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights were gaining early control in the match and dominated time of possession. Calvin continued to put the pressure on Alma in the first half as they outshot the Scots 10-5 on the half. The first goal of the game was scored by Senior Hailey Niles (Syracuse, NY / Onondaga CC) - her first of the season.
The Scots answered immediately after Niles scored to tie things up 1-1 with about nine minutes left in the half. Calvin was finished scoring in the first half as they put another one in before halftime. Freshman Talia List (Plymouth, MI / Salem) scored off an assist by Niles off a deflection in the box. The Knights went up 2-1 at halftime.
The second half started with Alma being aggressive on the attack, but senior goalkeeper Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, MI / Unity Christian) made two great saves to start the second half.
The Knights responded by putting the pressure back on the Scots, and they broke through with another goal. Senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mi / Plymouth Christian) added to their lead with a rocket to make it 3-1 in favor of Calvin.
Alma struggled to get anymore good opportunities, as Calvin maintained its lead. The Knights added an insurance goal with about four minutes left in the game by freshman Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, MI / Calvin Christian). Calvin claimed the 4-1 win on the road at Alma to improve to 8-2-0 on the season.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Good to get a road win result today," said Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Alma is a tough place to play. It was great to see our subs come into the game and change it for us by scoring goals. We need to rest up and get back to work on Monday."
