Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin celebrated Calvin Homecoming Weekend with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin improves to 8-2-2 on the season, heading into conference play next week.
Calvin struck for the game's first goal in the 20th minute on a well-executed play that began with a feed up the right wing from junior Ethan Harvey (Naperville, Il./Naperville Central HS) that found Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) on the edge of the box. Schau cut inside a defender and slipped a crossing back that senior Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic Central HS) slammed into the top left shelf of the Illinois Wesleyan goal, bringing a loud ovation from the homecoming crowd.
That second half was filled with fouls and the Knights took advantage when senior Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand HS) was clipped in the box while charging in on goal with the Knights awarded a penalty kick. Twigg stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake, drilling a hard shot past the Illinois Wesleyan keeper to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage in the 66th minute of play.
Calvin put the capper on the afternoon with a crowd-pleasing goal in the 89th minute as sophomore Zach Flowerday (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) raced through the right wing, drew in a defender and slid a pull-pack pass that was slammed into the net by freshman Ethan Brown (Norton Shores, Mich./Muskegon Mona Shores HS) for his fifth goal of the season.
Calvin finished with a 16-8 shots at goal advantage. Junior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) collected four saves in keeping a clean sheet in goal.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was really nice to a bounce back result today after dropping one at Chicago on Wednesday. We scored two really great goals and started to see some things that have been characteristically Calvin soccer. Hopefully we're able to continue some of those things as we head into a rugged MIAA Schedule."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Trine for a 4 p.m. conference game on Tuesday.
