Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich – The Calvin men's soccer team celebrated Senior Night with a dominant win over Alma with a score of 8-1 on Saturday evening.
The game started with both teams getting good looks on goal in the first two minutes of the game. Senior Coleman Ulry (Charlotte, NC / Covenant Day) almost put the Knights up a goal, but Alma's keeper made an incredible diving save to stop the threat. It didn't take long for Calvin to break through the Alma defense to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, IL / Lake Forest) had a cross to senior Sam Twigg (Auckland, NZ / N/A) for the game's first goal.
The Knights added another goal shortly after with Akintade dribbling near the box and ripping a shot to the lower right corner. Alma answered Calvin quickly with a goal of its own to make it a 2-1 game with 30 minutes left in the half. Calvin came right back at Alma as it extended its lead to 3-1 after a goal by senior Drew Van Andel (Grand Haven, MI / Grand Haven) with another assist going to Akintade.
Calvin continued to pour on the goals in the first half as it made it a 4-1 game. Sophomore Evan Nieuwenhuis scored of a deflection from an Alma defender as it kept adding pressure on the Scots. The Knights came up with one more goal before halftime as Twigg scored his second of the night on a great cross from Alex Bowser (Canton, MI / Plymouth) to give Calvin a 5-1 lead heading into halftime.
The Knights picked up right where they left off in the first half with another goal to open the second half. Senior Ethan Harvey (Naperville, MI / Naperville North) scored his first goal of the season while Akintade collected his third assist of the night to make it a 6-1 game.
Akintade scored his second of the evening as he dribbled around a group of defenders to make it a 7-1 lead.
The Knights added another goal in the last six minutes with junior Jack Kilgallon (Plainfield, IL / Wheaton Academy) putting one away with the assist going to Jon Szydlowski (Twinsbug, OH / Twinsburg). Calvin went on to win 8-1 to improve to 12-2-2 on the season and 4-0-0 in conference play.
Calvin outshot Alma 29-9 on the night with 15 on goal. The Knights also had 8 corner kicks while Alma had two.
The Knights honored these seniors for the Calvin Men's Soccer program on Senior Night: Jacob Cullen, Ethan Harvey, Trevor Nieuwenhuis, Luca Seazzu, Mason Smith, Jacob Tanis, Sam Twigg, Coleman Ulry, Drew Van Andel and David Warbrick.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Good to get another three points in conference play," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Always great to honor and acknowledge our seniors. What character and accomplishments they have brought to us from day one. We are so proud of who they're becoming; ecstatic they're ours."
