Box Score Calvin volleyball remained perfect in conference play with a 5-0 record as the Knights defeated Trine at home in three straight sets. The set scores were 25-15, 25-13, 25-17.
With the win, sixth-ranked Calvin improves to 20-2 overall, hitting the 20-win plateau for the 27th straight year. The Knights are also 5-0 in league play.
Calvin (20-2, 5-0) started the first set strong against Trine (13-12, 3-2) by jumping out to a strong 12-5 lead after a kill Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville). The Knights slowly kept adding to their big lead as the set progressed. Calvin dominated the first set as Trine struggled to get back into it, and the Knights won set one 25-15.
The Thunder began to show some fight in the second set as the Knights led 9-7 after a hard-hitting kill by Kelsey Smith (Vienna, VA / Madison). It was a close contest until the Knights started to pull away after a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian) gave them a 18-13 lead. Calvin ended they second set on a 7-0 run and took the set 25-13 to go up 2-0 in the match.
Calvin used its momentum from the second set to grab a 13-6 lead in the third thanks to a kill by Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). Trine had no answers for the Calvin in the third as the Knights continued to extend their lead and claim the set and match.
Westra led the way for the Knights with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .323. Smith finished the night with 9 kills and a .444 hitting percentage for Calvin. Senior Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg) finished with 19 assists and 6 digs while Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) also had 19 assists and 13 digs. Senior Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) finished the night with 14 digs and four service aces for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to get a conference win at home," said Calvin head volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We are continuing to focus on one point at a time and continued improvement. We have some time now to prepare for a big (next) week ahead so the challenge will be continued focus."
