GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team went up against Division II Grand Valley State Friday evening inside the Venema Aquatic Center. Calvin fell to the visiting Lakers by a score of 181-59.
The Knights had several strong performances in the meet. Senior Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) had a sterling evening, taking second in the 200 freestyle (1:54.29), missing the win by .15 of a second. She then took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.76 as she was edged at the finish line by a half-second.
Freshman Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) had a strong evening, placing second in the 100 butterfly (58.54) and third in the 200 IM (2:13.03). Junior Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was fourth in the 200 IM (2:14.65) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.60).
In the three-meter diving competition, senior Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) was second with a score of 276.75.
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Chaco, Sonday, junior Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Farrell was second (1:48.03). Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Maria Pfundt (Petersburg, AK/Petersburg HS), freshman Jenna Pierce (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), senior Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Lydia Walls (Warren, Oh./Warren G. Harding HS) also took second, recording a time of 3:50.61.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday, hosting Alma at 1 p.m.
