GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team went up against Division II Grand Valley State Friday evening inside the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights were defeated by the Lakers 156-86.
Calvin took first place in three of the opening events. Calvin opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.63. Calvin's relay consisted of freshman Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman School), freshman Forrest Peterson (Middleton, MN./Middleton HS) and senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School).
In the 1000 freestyle, freshman William Walker (Seminole, Fla./Osceola Fundamental HS) cruised to a win in a time of 9:47.82. Iturbe then raced his way to a win in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:38.63.
Calvin then took three of the top four spots in the 50 freestyle with Holstege taking second (20.82), senior Sam Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS) placing third (21.05) and Campbell placing fourth (21.44).
Sophomore Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 50.02 while Peterson was third (51.60).
Sophomore Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) powered his way to a second place swim in the 100 freestyle (46.25). In the 100 backstroke, sophomore William Toomey (Runnells, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) was third in the 100 backstroke (52.66), Campbell was third (52.75) and senior Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice HS) fifth (52.98).
In the diving competition, the Bergsma brothers had a strong night of diving. In the three-meter competition, freshman Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (258.95) while senior Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (245.45).
On the one-meter board, Jordan took third (273.20) with Alex fourth (235.00).
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Alma at 1 p.m.
