Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin suffered its first home defeat of the season, falling to Trine University 83-65 Wednesday night inside Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (3-2) held a 33-27 first half lead after a three-pointer by junior Jacob Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) but Trine (6-0) closed out the half on a 16-9 run to take a 43-42 halftime lead.
Calvin took a 44-43 lead in the opening minute of the second half but Trine junior Nick Bowman fired in eight straight points to vault the Thunder into a lead it would never relinquish.
Trine shot 60.9 percent from the field in the second half in pulling away for the win.
Bowman led all scorers with 28 points on 10 of 16 shooting to go with seven rebounds. The Thunder were 11 of 20 from three-point range (.550).
Calvin shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half but just 32.1 percent in the second half as the Knights were outscored 40-23 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Senior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin in scoring with 21 points while sophomore Brandon Paul (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Ste. Marie HS) had 14 points. Junior Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Calvin committed a season-high 18 turnovers in the loss.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they host rival Hope at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
