Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell to Alma in its season and home opener 63-54 Saturday afternoon.
The game started off slow for both teams as they were shaking off the rust, but the Knights were able breakthrough first with a layup by Sydney Cleary (Middleville, MI / South Christian). Calvin continued to get the scoring early with back-to-back threes by Abbie Cooly (Castle Rock, CO / Castle View) and Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) to give them a 8-4 lead. Cooly made a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 13-7, but the Scots went on a 5-0 run to tie it up heading into the second quarter.
Alma used the momentum it had towards the end of quarter to take a 17-14 in the early minutes of the second. Junior Kamryn Elgersma (Redlands, CA / Arrowhead Christian) made a three-pointer to tie it at 17-17 with eight minutes left and sparked a run for the Knights. A 9-0 run was capped off by a three-pointer by Coors to give Calvin a 26-17 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. The Scots answered with a 10-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to 2 with a score of 29-27 heading into halftime.
The second half began with the Scots coming out with lots of energy to grab a 37-33 lead with 5:32 left. Coors was able to grab a double-double in the 3rd quarter, but the Knights struggled to find offense as they connected on just one field goal in the quarter. Alma kept piling on the points as they took a 45-37 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Scots continued a 16-0 run into the fourth to take a 55-37 lead with about eight left in the game. Calvin came back into the game with 14-2 run to make it a 57-51 game with 2:30 left. It was too late for the comeback as the Scots were able to connect on the free throw line and hold off the Knights by a final score of 63-54.
Stephanie Coors led the Knights in scoring with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Rebecca Boeve (Grandville, MI / Covenant Christian) finished with 8 point and 8 rebounds. Calvin shot 23.2% from the floor, 26.9% from three-point line, and outrebounded the Scots 52-47.
