After spending an exciting weekend at the power-packed John Carroll
Invitational, the Knights escaped with a 2-2 record. With wins over host school
John Carroll and Rochester, the Knights also dropped matches to JCU and Mount
Union.
After losing to JCU in five games on Friday night, Calvin bounced back on
Saturday to drop the Blue Streaks in straight games 30-14, 30-26, 30-12. Pell
headlined the Calvin attack, compiling 15 kills and three blocks. Steady front
line play by the Knights continued with Kuipers recording 12 kills with four
blocks and Christopher checking in with 11 kills. Tucker added 43 assists.
With the win over John Carroll, the Knights were propelled into the
championship game of the gold pool, where they were defeated by Mt. Union 30-27,
30-27, 23-30, 30-28. Kuipers led the Calvin offense with 22 kills along with
three service aces. Pell added 19 kills and Christopher chipped in with 13
kills. Tucker compiled 50 assists and junior Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian)
recorded 32 digs.
Calvin (7-3) will return to the friendly confines of the Calvin Fieldhouse next
Tuesday for a league match with Adrian slated to start at 6:30 p.m..
