Calvin wasted an opportunity to move into sole possession of first place
in the MIAA standings as the Knights suffered a 26-30, 25-30, 30-20, 30-22,
15-12 defeat at Alma Friday evening. The Alma victory combined with a Kalamazoo
win over visiting Hope Friday evening tightened up the MIAA race considerably as
the Scots moved into a tie for second place in the league standings with Calvin
at 8-3 while Hope remained in first place at 8-2 in conference play.
The Alma victory was the fifth straight win for the Scots including their eighth
in their last nine outings.
Calvin was led statistically by junior Melissa Pell (Fremont) who rolled up 18
kills and a match-high eight block and two service aces. Freshman Kristin
DeGroot (Tulare, CA) added 14 kills and two aces. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz
(Prinsburg, MN) contributed 50 assists for the Knights while sophomore Tricia
Balkema (Highland, IN) collected 22 digs.
The Knights will now break until Wednesday evening when they host the Flying
Dutch of Hope at 6:30 pm in a pivotal MIAA conference match
