Calvin was victorious over St. Mary's College on Wednesday night to open
play in the MIAA tournament. Second-seeded Calvin wasted little time
with seventh-seeded St. Mary's, defeating the Belles 15-3, 15-5, 15-4.
The win moves Calvin into the MIAA semi-finals on Friday night where
they will face the Alma Scots at Hope's Dow Center at 5:30. Alma
defeated Adrian 15-10, 15-5, 16-14 Wednesday to advance to Friday's
semifinal. Hope will meet Kalamazoo in the second semi Friday at 8 pm.
Hope defeated Olivet in three games Wednesday while Kalamazoo defeated
Albion 3-1.
The winner of Friday's semifinals will play in the championship final
Saturday at 7 pm.
Against St. Mary's, Calvin fell behind 3-2 but Calvin would score the
next 13 points to go on to win 15-3. Calvin dominated the second game,
due to a 13-0 run to start the game and won 15-5. Calvin continued its
dominating style of play in the third game, taking it by a score of
15-4.
The Knights were led by senior middle hitter Rhonda Volkers who tallied
16 kills, 5 service aces and 3 digs. Also chipping in for Calvin was
senior outside hitter Ann Wiersma who had 9 kills, 6 digs, and 1 service
ace. Junior setter Sara Ahrenholz turned in 32 assists, 4 digs and 2
aces.
