Calvin concluded its play in the Midwest Invitational on Saturday
afternoon, picking up two more victories to place fifth. The Knights
beat Bluffton College earlier in the day by a score of 15-11, 6-15,
15-8, and 15-11. In the fifth place game against Wheaton College it took
the Knights four games to knock off the Thunder 10-15, 16-14, 15-2,
15-4.
Leading the Knights in the Bluffton game was all tournament team honoree
Rhonda Volkers as she came up with 17 kills, 12 digs, 5 aces and 2
blocks. Also chipping in was Ann Wiersma who had 16 kills, 5 digs, and 2
blocks. Melissa Pell contributed 8 kills and 6 blocks. Sara Ahrenholz
dished out 51 assists.
Calvin was led in the Wheaton match by Wiersma who tallied 22 kills, 8
digs, and 1 block. Also helping out the Knights was Volkers who also had
a great performance as she recorded 16 kills, 12 digs, 7 aces and 2
blocks. Ahrenholz had 57 assists, 8 digs, 4 blocks and 4 aces. In the
victory the Knights set a new Calvin single match record with 17 service
aces.
The Knights (25-7, 11-2 MIAA) return to action on Wednesday evening when
they open the MIAA tournament at home with a first round match against
the Belles of St. Mary's College at 7 PM.
