Calvin overcame a sluggish team performance to hold off Alma 15-13,
15-8, 11-15, 16-14 Tuesday night at the Cappert Gymnasium. Senior
All-American Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) was anything but
sluggish Tuesday night however as she came up with a triple-double
performance, compiling 14 kills, 13 digs and a a career-high 12 blocks.
Senior Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA) also came up with 19 kills and 15 digs
for the Knights while junior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN)
tossed out 56 assists.
In addition, freshman Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) came up with 13 digs
and three service aces.
Ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin closes out its MIAA
regular season campaign with a 12-2 conference record. The Knights
could still gain a share of the MIAA regular season crown but would need
St. Mary's to upset league-leading Hope Wednesday evening. Calvin is
guaranteed the second seed for the MIAA Tournament scheduled to begin on
November 1.
Calvin will now prepare to host the Midwest Invititional Friday and
Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin will open play Friday at 3:00
pm against Hanover. The Knights will then meet regionally-ranked DePauw
at 6:30 pm. Calvin and DePauw are two of seven regionally-ranked teams
from the Great Lakes Region scheduled to compete in the Midwest
Invitational. Two-time defending champion Mount St. Joseph will head
into the weekend ranked number-one in the Great Lakes Region and seventh
nationally.
