With one league match left in the first half of the double round-robin
league schedule, there's a three-way tie for first place between Alma,
Calvin and Hope in the MIAA standings as all three schools stand 5-1 in
league play. Calvin and Alma created the three-way tie for first place
with Tuesday night victories as Calvin came from behind to defeat
Kalamazoo 9-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-6, 15-11 while Alma defeated Adrian.
The victory was the fourth consecutive conference victory for the
Knights including their eighth win in their last nine overall outings.
It sets up a key match with Alma Friday at the Fieldhouse at 6:30 pm.
In its win over Kalamazoo, Calvin was led by sophomore Melissa Pell
(Fremont) who tallied 16 kills and five blocks while senior Ann Wiersma
(Vista, CA) chalked up 14 kills, 12 digs and five blocks while senior
Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) tallied 12 kills. In addition,
junior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) dished out 57 assists along
with 13 digs while senior Alicia DeGroot (Tulare, CA) was credited with
a pair of service aces.
