Calvin improved to 8-2 on the year with pool play victories over
Baldwin-Wallace and Grove City Friday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio,
allowing the Knights to advance into Saturday's Gold Pool division.
Calvin opened the tournament with a 15-6, 14-16, 15-12, 15-13 victory
over Baldwin-Wallace and followed with a 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 17-15 win
over Grove City.
Senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) had a huge match against
Baldwin-Wallace with 24 kills and six blocks while senior Ann Wiersma
(Vista, CA) had 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Tricia Balkema
(Highland, IN) was also superb with 11 killds while junior setter Sara
Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) had 59 assists; senior Alicia DeGroot (Tulare,
CA) 12 digs and three aces and sophomore Melissa Pell (Fremont) seven
blocks.
Volkers came up with another tremendous effort against Grove City,
racking up 22 kills, 17 digs and four blocks while Wiersma was equal to
the task, recording 26 kills and four blocks. Ahrenholz was the
offensive catalyst in the win, dishing out a season-high 72 assists
along with a pair of service aces. In addition, Pell had 14 kills and
seven blocks and sophomore Sarah Rottman (Holland Christian) two service
aces.
Calvin opens play in the Gold Pool Saturday morning against Kenyon.
