Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team was defeated at Kalamazoo College on Wednesday night by a score of 58-53.
Kalamazoo came ready to play on its Senior Night as the Hornets started on a 12-3 run to begin the game. Calvin struggled to score in the early minutes as it went 1-7 from the field. The Hornets pushed their lead to eleven with a score of 21-10 with 9:55 left in the half.
Junior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) got the Knights going with a three pointer at the top of the key to pull within eight points. This sparked a 9-0 scoring run for Calvin to pull within two with a score of 21-19, and it was capped off by a beautiful back door cut layup by sophomore Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, MI / Kalamazoo Christian). The Hornets responded with a 6-0 run to make it a 27-19 game with 6:02 left in the half.
The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth match and Kalamazoo took the lead into halftime with a score of 33-27. Calvin was 30% from the field in the first half and was 18.8% from the three-point line. The Knights outrebounded the Hornets 18-16 and had 5 team assists.
The second half was underway, and it was still a seesaw match until the Knights started to cut into the lead. Shymanski hit a three with about 17 minutes left in the game to cut the Kalamazoo lead down to three at 36-33. The Hornets picked up the pace and went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 46-33 with 14:30 left in the game.
Kalamazoo made Calvin work for each bucket as the Knights slowly cut into the Hornets' lead. Senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, MI / Calvin Christian) drove down the lane and made a contested layup to pull Calvin within six with a score of 49-43 with 10 minutes left. Both teams struggled to score down the stretch until senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) converted a layup with a foul and connected on the free throw to make a three-point game with a score of 51-48 with 7:31 left in the game.
Both teams had trouble finding scoring in the final minutes of the game. DeVries got fouled with 2:57 left in the game and made one of his two free throws to make it a 51-50 game. Kalamazoo was able to make its free throws and stop the Knights on the next possession. The Hornets came down the court and hit a clutch three pointer to seal the game with 1:30 left in the game. The Knights couldn't close out any of their following possessions and ended falling to Kalamazoo with a score of 58-53.
Shymanski lead the Knights in score with 17 points while DeVries had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Senior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) finished with a double double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists as well. Calvin shot 29% from the field and 19.4% from the three-point line.
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Adrian College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and the winner of this game will claim second place in the MIAA and a first round bye for next week's MIAA Tournament.
