Calvin opened its 2003 MIAA campaign in grand style as the Knights swept rival
Hope 30-23, 30-23, 30-20 Wednesday Knight at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The
victory allowed Calvin to remain unbeaten on the season with a 5-0 overall mark
while improving to 1-0 in the MIAA.
Junior middle hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) was the catalyst
throughout the evening for the Maroon and Gold as she collected 20 kills and
nine blocks while posting a sizzling .655 hitting percentage. The current MIAA
Player of the Week, Kuipers also picked up a pair of service aces and two digs.
Sophomore middle hitter Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) also had a big
night with 11 kills, four blocks and a .435 hitting percentage while sophomore
setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) tossed out a career-high 56
assists. Senior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) and junior Kristin DeGroot
(Tulare, CA) were also stellar in the back row with Balkema posting nine digs
and DeGroot 12 digs.
After rolling to relatively easy 30-23 wins in games one and two, Calvin
trailed 19-17 in game three before rolling off 10 unanswered points to take
command of the game and match.
Hope (2-3 overall, 0-1 MIAA) was led by senior Katie Hall who collected 12
kills while senior McKenna Troyan had 18 assists. Hope libero Shawna Buche
also had a match-high 19 digs.
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts St. Mary's at 7:00 p.m. at
the Calvin Fieldhouse.
