Calvin Defeats Wheaton and Bluffton

Calvin cruised through pool play at its own Midwest Invitational, securing a 
2-0 record with wins over Bluffton College 30-12, 30-15, 30-13 and Wheaton 
College 30-27, 30-16, 30-16. The victories place Calvin atop the black pool 
which included Bluffton and Wheaton. The 12-team field consists of four of these 
three team pools. 

In the match with Bluffton, the Knights made quick work of the Beavers, 
sweeping them in straight games. Calvin was led by senior middle-hitter Melissa 
Pell (Fremont) who amassed 11 kills and eight blocks. Sophomore Kara Kuipers 
(Unity Christian) added seven kills while senior Cassie Christopher had six 
kills and six service aces. Senior setter Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) 
paced the Knights with 38 assists and five aces. 

In a three game victory over the Wheaton Thunder, Calvin was led by Pell, who 
recorded 13 kills. Following close behind was Kuipers who amassed 11 kills and 
four service aces while Christopher added nine kills and four service aces. 
Tucker dished out 36 assists. 

With the pair of victories the Knights move into the upper tier of Saturday's 
action. Calvin will play DePauw at 1:30 pm for the right to move on to the 
championship game versus the winner of the Anderson/Hope game at 5:30 pm. The 
losers of each match will square off in the consolation final (3rd/4th place) 
scheduled to take place at 5:30 pm.
