Calvin Men's Basketball Edged by Trine

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin fell to Trine 81-78 at Van Noord Arena Saturday afternoon. 

The Knights started off on a 10-4 run to start the game which was capped off by a three-pointer by junior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). Calvin (8-7 overall, 2-2 MIAA) kept the offense going by shooting 6 of 6 from the field and 3 of 3 from three in the first five minutes of the game to take a 16-10 lead.

Trine started to pick up the pace on the offensive end, going on a 10-0 run to take a 20-16 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The Thunder couldn't stop the Knights for long as they followed with an 8-2 run which was topped off with a turnaround jumper by senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) which gave Calvin a 24-22 lead with six minutes left in the half.

Both teams started trading buckets the rest of the half. The Knights got a steal in the final seconds and sophomore Nate Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) hit a buzzer beater from beyond half court to give the Knights a 37-34 lead heading into halftime.

The Thunder (10-5 overall, 4-0 MIAA) came out scorching hot out of the break as they hit four straight triples to take a quick 46-37 lead in the first four minutes of the half. Trine continued to pour on the points as it went on a 21-8 run in the first six minutes of the second half to take a 55-45 lead. Langston Johnson scored 13 straight points for Trine during the run.

Calvin kept the pressure up on Trine as senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, MI / Calvin Christian) hit a huge triple to pull the Knights within 59-56 with 8:40 lef. It became a close back-and-forth game from that point on. Junior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) made a great block and went right down court to score a lay-up with a foul, and it tied the game up with 5:25 left.

The next big play came by Minderhoud hitting a clutch three to give the Knights a 72-71 lead with 2:51 left in the game. Trine came right back at Calvin as Maurice Hunter hit a jumper plus the foul with 1:05 left in the game to give the Thunder a 77-76 lead.

Shymanski pulled the Knights within one with two free throws to make it a 79-78 with six seconds left. Calvin fouled Trine and the Thunder made both free throws and had an 81-78 lead with 3.7 seconds left. The Knights had one more shot, and it fell just short with the Thunder holding on for the win.

Thad Shymanski led the team in scoring with 19 points while Derrick DeVries finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Calvin shot 48% from the field and 39% from the three-point line.

NEXT UP: Calvin heads to Alma College for a conference contest on Wednesday January 22 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30.
