HOLLAND, Mich. - Calvin had its four-game conference winning streak come to an end with a 74-50 lost to rival Hope College at DeVos Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
The Knights came out ready to play by starting the game off with an 8-2 run which was capped off by a jumper for sophomore Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock. CO / Castle View). Hope responded quickly and tied the game at 8 with six minutes left in the first quarter.
It became a back-and-forth contest the reminder of the quarter with the Flying Dutch scoring with 15 seconds left and taking a 17-14 leading heading into the second quarter.
Third-ranked Hope outscored Calvin 23-8 in the second quarter as the Flying Dutch were 10-19 from the field and took a 40-23 lead heading into halftime. Calvin shot 10-of-30 from the field and was 1-of-10 from the three-point line.
The Flying Dutch (15-0 overall, 6-0 MIAA) maintained control of the game over the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Knights 34-28 in the second half to get the win by a score of 74-50.
Calvin (10-6 overall, 4-3 MIAA) shot 30.3% from the field and 20.7% from three. Hope outrebounded Calvin 43-26 and was 14-17 from the free throw line. Hope also had 37 points from the bench.
Sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) lead the Knights in scoring with 12 points while sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, MI / South Christian) had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Hope's leading scorer was Jess Mooman with 14 points followed by teammate Courtney Barnes.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought our approach to the game was good," said Calvin women's basketball head coach Mark Christner. "We had some good looks at the basket. We just need to make more. I also credit Hope. They played extremely well."
NEXT UP: The Knights head to Kalamazoo College for a conference matchup on Saturday January 18 with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
