LANSING, Mich. - In a matchup of nationally-ranked rivals, Calvin downed Wittenberg in three sets Friday night at the MIAA/NCAC Crossover Challenge at the Aim High Sports Complex.

Ranked second nationally, Calvin defeated the eighth-ranked Tigers 25-21, 25-11, 29-27.

Calvin (4-0) used stellar serving and dominant play at the net to pull away for the win. The Knights finished with 13 service aces with six coming from sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) and another six off the right hand of freshman Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had a dominating performace with 15 kills, 10 assists, six digs and three block assists while hitting at a .462 clip.

Calvin amassed 12 block assists with senior Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Hs) and junior McKenna Covey (Costa Mesa, Ca./Estancia HS) picking up three block assists apiece

Sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS)) had nine kills while Schriemer added 16 assists and six digs.

Calvin overcame a deficit in set three to win a lengthy final match. A Wittenberg (2-2) service error put the Knights up 28-27 and an overpass that allowed DeVries the opportunity to slam-dunk a kill at the net to close the out match.

COACHES QUOTE: "I loved our grit and fight tonight," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We can still play much better and we are going to continue to work hard to improve."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Kenyon College at noon and DePauw University at 4 p.m. to close out tournament play.
