MECHANICSBURG Pa. - Calvin closed out play at the Messiah Invitational with victories over Christopher Newport and Cabrini on Saturday. Ranked second nationally, the Knights are now 9-0 on the season.

Calvin opened the afternoon with a 23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21 over a Christopher Newport team that entered the 2019 season ranked 22nd nationally.

Christopher Newport (3-5) built a 20-16 lead in set one but Calvin rallied back with a 6-1 run to take a 22-21 advantage. Calvin later tied the set at 23 but the Captains took the final two points off a Calvin attack error and a subsequent service ace.

Calvin owned the early momentum in set two, taking a 23-15 lead. Leading 24-19, Calvin saw Christopher Newport score the next four points to creep to within 24-23. Calvin freshman Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Il./Timothy Christian HS) extinguished the comeback bid with a kill off a feed from senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS).

Sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) recorded nine kills and seven digs while sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) put up 24 assists and a pair of service aces.

Calvin completed the tournament with a 26-24, 25-6, 25-18 win over Cabrini (4-6).

The Knights trailed 24-23 in the opening set but scored the final three points including a double-block by DeVries and Westra that sealed the set. Calvin then cruised through sets two and three.

COACHES COMMENT: "I would like to give thanks to Messiah College for hosting a great tournament," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We played three very good defensive teams. We were pushed and learned a lot about ourselves this weekend. We will work hard next week to improve more."

NEXT UP: Calvin travels to eighth-ranked Chicago on September 18 for a key non-conference match. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m. (CDT).
