Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's soccer team defeated Benedictine University 4-1 on Wednesday evening at Zuidema Field.
The Knights struck first in the 10th minute as senior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich. / Canton) connected with senior Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich. / Lansing Christian) and he blasted one in the net to take the early 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, the Eagles responded with a goal of their own to tie it up.
As the half concluded, the game remained tied at 1-1.
Calvin came out strong the second half as freshman Ethan Harvey (Naperville, Il. / Naperville North) found sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, NZ. / N/A) around the six-yard box and he headed it in the net to give the Knights the 2-1 edge.
The Knights extended their lead 3-1 in the 74th minute as senior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) shot from the left wing which was saved off the keeper's hands and junior Shay Smith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington Christian) cleaned up the rebound for the goal.
Less than a minute later, the Knights struck again as Smith hit a shot and it went off the keeper's hands to Adams feet and he bolted the ball in the net.
The Knights ran off with the 4-1 victory to improve their season record to 4-1.
Calvin outshot Benedictine 29 to 10.
Calvin's keeper junior Chris Morrish (Bradenton, Fla. / Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) had four saves in the net.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they host Wooster at 4:30 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
