Calvin Women's Basketball Celebrates Seniors Day With 75-61 Victory Over Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, - Calvin celebrated Senior Day with a 75-61 victory over Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (11-13 overall, 6-9 MIAA) scored the final 14 points of the game to pull away for the win.

With the win, Calvin moves into sole possession of sixth place in the MIAA conference standings, a half-game of Adrian. The top six teams in the final league standings advance to the MIAA Tournament.

Prior to the game, Calvin honored its three seniors - Sarah Cassel (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS),  Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) and Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who were playing in their final game at Van Noord Arena.

Kalamazoo (0-23 overall, 0-14 MIAA) pushed Calvin for more than three quarters on the celebratory day however with the Knights kicking off their final 14-0 run inside the final five minutes of play.

Calvin led 18-11 after one quarter of play but led just 35-32 at halftime. Kalamazoo outscored 21-18 in the third quarter to tie the game at 53. The Hornets later led 55-53 and 59-58. Calvin regained the lead at 61-59 on an old-fashioned three-point play by freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) with 6:31 remaining. Kalamazoo's Amanda Moss tied the game at 61 on a jump shot with 5:04 remaining before the Knights ripped off 14 straight points to close out the win.

The Knights were paced by Timmer who notched her 11th double-double of the season with 31 points and 17 rebounds, matching a career scoring-high in the process. Warners also notched a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards while junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) tossed in 15 points and snared seven rebounds. Freshman Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) contributed nine points and four rebounds.

Calvin shot 40.3 percent overall but just 25.9 percent (7 of 27) from three-point range. The Knights also turned the ball over 17 times. Kalamazoo shot 33.8 percent from the field including 37.0 percent (10 of 27) from three-point range. Calvin outrebounded Kalamazoo 60-27.

The Knights close out their MIAA regular season campaign next Wednesday when they travel to Olivet for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
