Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Takes the Win Over Wheaton in Non-Conference Dual Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 15th-ranked Calvin men's swimming and diving team rolled to a 182-111 non-conference victory over Wheaton Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center.

Calvin took first place in 10 events and used solid depth throughout the meet to pull away for the win.

Freshman William Toomey (Runnells, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) had a big day, winning the 100 backstroke (53.80) and 200 backstroke (1:59.57). Junior Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice HS) was also second in the 100 backstroke (55.98).

Calvin took the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle with junior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman School) winning in 10:00.41 with senior Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) taking second (10:15.79) and freshman Jacob Iddings (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS) placing third (10:42.46). Iturbe also claimed a win in the 200 IM (1:57.46).

In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School) was first (21.11) and senior Tristan Hazlett (Lutz, Fla./Home School) secod (21.75).

The Knights took the top two spots in the 200 backstroke with freshman Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) winning in 1:45.00 while senior Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second (1:47.28).

Calvin swept the top three spots in the diving competition. Junior Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the one-meter competition with a score of 192.52 while freshman Jay Cen (Deerfield, Il./Deerfield HS) was second 135.74 and sophomore Dat Cao (Vung Tau City, Viet Nam/Mount St. Mary Catholic) third (129.00).

In the three-meter competition, Bergsma took first (215.17), Cen was second (143.24) and Cao third (122.55).

The 200 medley relay went to the Calvin team of Noah Holstege, senior Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School), freshman Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) with a time of 1:36.16.

Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Randall, Sparks, Noah Holstege and Heeres cruised to a win in a time of 311.13.

COACHES COMMENT: "This was a solid win over a friendly non-conference rival," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "This is always a special meet on the calendar. We took on a full 16-event lineup for the first time this year and felt we performed very well. We are showing more depth than last year which will help us later this season."
