Calvin Volleyball Scoots by Scots - Captures Outright MIAA Regular Season Title

ALMA, Mich. - Calvin wrapped up the outright MIAA regular season title with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 conference victory at Alma Friday night.

Ranked fourth nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin improves to 22-2 overall and finished the MIAA regular season with an 8-0 conference record.

Calvin pulled away from the host Scots (17-12 overall, 5-3 MIAA) in all three sets.

In set one, the teams were tied at 16 before the Knights reeled off an 8-2 run, en route to winning the set.

In set two, Calvin led 17-15 but reeled off a 6-1 run to take a 23-16 run and never looked back.

In set three, Calvin led 18-15 and proceeded to close out the set and the match on a 7-3 run.

Senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had a huge match with 15 kills, 18 assists, six digs and three service aces along with a .500 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) had eight kills while junior McKenna Covey (Costa Mesa, Ca./Estancia HS)) had seven kills and three block assists.

Sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) came up with 20 assists while freshman Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had 15 digs.

COACHES COMMENT: "Alma is a very good team and they played very hard on their Senior Night," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We came ready to play with a lot of energy. I'm very proud of our team. They kept keep working through things to get better. We are looking forward to getting back in the gym for more improvement and then play in the conference tournament."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host the MIAA Tournament semifinals and finals next Friday (November 8) and Saturday (November 9). Calvin will face the winner of a first round match between the #4 and #5 seeds which will be played earlier in the week.
