Calvin Men's Soccer Moves Past Manchester to Capture Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament Title

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin captured the championship of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Manchester University Saturday evening at Zuidema Field. Calvin finishes the tournament with a 2-0-0 record. Hope also finished with a 2-0-0 record but the Knights held a seven-goal differential in scoring margin over the Flying Dutchmen to win the tiebreaker and the title.

Ranked seventh nationally, Calvin outscored the opposition 13-0 over the weekend. The Knights (2-0-0) led 3-0 at halftime and poured in five second half goals.

Junior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board with a laser shot in the 16th minute from the left side of the box after receiving a well-placed pass from senior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS). Sophomore Shaeffer Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) put the Knights up 2-0 with a shot from in the box in the 37th minute on a feed from senior Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).

Senior Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) provided a dramatic goal in the final second of the first half, tucking in a shot just inside the near post on an assist from Vegter.

Fueled by the late first half goal, Calvin continued its momentum in the second half. McCaw raced through on a breakaway in the 49th minute and belted in his second goal of the season to put the Knights up 4-0.

Junior Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) was able to head home a corner kick from junior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) in the 59th minute.

Olson ripped home his second goal of the season in the 63rd minute.

Albrecht brought the crowd to its feet in the 72nd minute as senior goalkeeper Luke Schepers (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) sent a long punt that sprung Albrecht free on a clean break. After two dribbles, Albrecht was able to slot home his second goal of the evening with Schepers drawing the rare goalkeeper assist.

Freshman Sam Twigg (Auckland, NZ) closed out the scoring with a half-volley rip from 25 yards out that splashed inside the upper 90 with 5:03 remaining.

Sophomore Chris Morrish (Bradenton, Fl./St. Stephan's Episcopal School) and Schepers combined on the shutout in goal for the Knights.

"I thought we were sharp on a warm and humid night," said Souders. "For the second straight night, we also received strong contributions from our bench and that made a big difference. It allowed our guys to keep their legs relatively fresh despite the temperature. It was good to open with a pair of home wins. We have more work to do but we'll take this result and move forward."

Calvin will now prepare for a tournament next weekend in Ada, Ohio. The Knights will face Millikin University next Friday at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Ohio Northern and then meet host Ohio Northern next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
