Box Score NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Calvin opened its 2018-19 MIAA campaign with a 62-54 victory at Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon.
The Knights improve to 4-3 overall and now own a two-game win streak.
Calvin led 41-25 at halftime as freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) scored 21 first half points on 10-of-10 shooting from the field.
St. Mary's (2-5) chipped into the Calvin lead in the second half, outscoring the Knights 13-5 in the third quarter and 14-8 in the fourth quarter.
Calvin led 54-40 heading into the fourth quarter but the Belles used a 14-4 scoring run to close to within six points with 1:24 left to play.
Calvin held St. Mary's without a point the rest of the way however and sealed the game with a pair of free throws by junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS).
The Knights were led by Timmer who pumped in 27 points on 13 of 16 shooting to go with five rebounds. Senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) added 14 points while freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) had nine points and five rebounds.
As a team, Calvin was 8 of 16 from three-point range.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it host Trine in a conference game at 3 p.m.
