Calvin Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Knight With Win Over Kalamazoo

Box Score

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Calvin men's soccer team defeated Kalamazoo college in a conference match at Zuidema Field 6-0.

It may have been a bitterly cold night, but the Knights were on fire. Calvin dominated the first half as it controlled possession of the ball.

The Knights struck in the 37thminute as senior Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) found freshman Mason Smith (Flint, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) inside the 18-yard box and he fired one to the far corner to put Calvin on the board.

Three minutes later, junior Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich. / Lansing Christian) found senior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Iowa. /Hempstead) and he snuck one past the keeper from the top of the 6-yard box.

With the momentum in the Knights favor, a minute later Smith struck again as he exploded a shot from the 18-yard box to record his second goal of the game, fifth on the season.

During halftime, eight Calvin Seniors were honored. Bobby McCaw, Trent Vegter, Jacob Witte, Daniel Norton, Lucas Albrecht, Reid Culberson, Luke Schpers, and James Jeninga

As the second half began, it didn't take long for the Knights to attack as Vegter found junior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) on the run and he chipped on in over the goalie to put the Knights up 4-0. This was Adams fifth goal on the season.

Three minute later, McCaw located junior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) on a cross pass and he tapped it in. Weldy on fire, scored a second goal as he slipped one past the keeper to the far post. This was Weldy's sixth goal on the season.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 33 to 5. Calvin goal keepers sophomore Chris Morrish (Bradenton, Fla. / Saints Stephan's Episcopal School) and senior Luke Schepers (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) both had two saves on goal to help the Knights shut out the hornets.

With tonight's victory, the Knights clinched a share of the MIAA conference title. The Knights also sealed a #1 seed for the MIAA Tournament. Calvin will host an MIAA Semifinal match on Oct. 30th

Calvin is now 14-1 on the season and 6-0 in the MIAA.
