Calvin then received a huge boost heading into overtime as freshman
Kelli Mannes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian HS) lofted a high arching shot that beat that keeper with just 10 seconds left in the first half. The late first half strike was the first goal of Mannes' career.
Mannes scored again in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from junior teammate
Kali Mouw (Avon, NY/Avon Central HS) and blasting in a shot from the top of the box to seal the win.
Calvin outshot Trine 11-8 including 8-2 in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper
Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) collected four saves while posting her third shutout victory of the year.
Calvin's win came on the heels of a 4-0 rivalry loss at Hope on Saturday. According to head coach
Mark Recker, the Knights bounced back nicely.
"Today was another away game for this young team but it was first after after dealing with a (Saturday) setback," said Recker. "This game offered another growth step opportunity and we definitely moved forward. How a team responses can set standards for games to come. The team didn't falter but coped with finding a competitive pace in the first half, finding a way to score. In the second half, the team played with more purpose which was very good to see."
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Wheaton College (Il.) for a non-conference game Wednesday night at 6 p.m. (EDT).
