Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team claimed an 82-52 conference victory at Adrian on Saturday and in doing so, hit the 20-win plateau for the 17th time in school history and for the first time under head coach Chuck Winkelman.
Calvin (20-4 overall, 11-4 MIAA) has also now secured a spot in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament. The Knights will host Albion Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night and can clinch the third seed for the league tournament with a win.
In its victory at Adrian Saturday afternoon, Calvin led 18-15 after one quarter of play but then outscored the Bulldogs 25-10 in the second quarter to building a 43-25 halftime lead. Calvin continuing to roll in the second half, outscoring Adrian 23-9 and never looked back from that point on.
Junior
Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) led all scorers with 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting while also dishing out four assists. Senior
Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had 14 points and seven rebounds along with three assists and a pair of steals. Junior
Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) added 14 points and five rebounds while senior
Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./Lasalle HS) had nine points. Sophomore
Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) also distributed four assists while senior
MacKenzie Shelton (Niles, Mich./Brandywine HS) had three assists.
Calvin outrebounded the Bulldogs 43-38 and shot 50 percent from the field as well as 70 percent (21 of 30) from the free throw line. Adrian (12-11 overall, 7-8 MIAA) was led by Brigitte Zavithsanos with 11 points but the Bulldogs shot just 26.2 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 21 times.
Calvin's game on Wednesday against Albion will serve as Senior Night as Calvin seniors Anna Timmer, MacKenzie Shelton and Lauren Goldthorpe will be honored during the evening.
