Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The No. 4 ranked Calvin volleyball team improved to 23-3 on the year and 15-0 in MIAA play with a 3-0 victory at Albion on Friday night. The Knights defeated the Britons, 25-19, 25-9, 25-23. Albion falls to 14-13 and 8-7 in MIAA action.
"Tonight was a nice victory over a very tough Albion team," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "I thought we hit the ball very well tonight and we will now have to focus on a very good Trine team."
The Britons claimed the lead early in the first set. Tied at two, the Brits pushed the lead to 5-2. Calvin fought back and tied the set at six. The Purple and Gold pushed the lead back up to three at 12-9. The Knights reclaimed the lead with a 9-1 run. Calvin closed the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-19. Senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) led all players with five kills in the first set.
The serving of senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) helped the Knights jump out to a 7-1 lead in the second set. Calvin kept the pressure on the Britons and pushed the lead to 12-2. The Knights cruised to a 25-9 victory in the second set. The Knights hit .455 in the second set. Emily Blankespoor recorded four service aces in the second set, including back-to-back aces to make it 23-8.
The third set started with neither team being able to create any separation. The largest lead of the set came at 17-13 with a kill from senior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian). The Britons did not fold in the third set and cut the Calvin lead to 22-21. The Knights responded with a 3-0 run force match point. After two Briton points, Tessa Van Laare hit the final nail in the coffin with a kill at 25-23. Tessa Van Laare and junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) both notched six kills in the third set.
Anna Kamp led all players with 15 kills and hot .448 on Friday. Jenna Lodewyk hit a blistering .692 at Albion and recorded nine kills, nine digs and 26 assists. Freshman Sydney Segard Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) tallied seven kills on 11 attacks. Emily Blankespoor and junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) both had 15 digs on Friday, with Blankespoor leading the match with four service aces.
The Knights close the regular season on Saturday when they host Trine.
