No. 1 Volleyball Aces Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 1 Knights made quick work of the Kalamazoo Hornets on Friday night, 3-0. Calvin improves to 11-0 on the season and remained perfect in the MIAA at 5-0. Kalamazoo falls to 3-10 and 1-5 in the MIAA. The Knights swept the Hornets, 25-9, 25-13, 25-11.

"I am really happy with how we played tonight," said head coach Amber Warners. "There are many things we did well, but there are things that we have to fix. We have to now get ready for tomorrow, because Alma is a very good team."

The Knights jumped out to an early lead in set one, taking a 9-3 lead. Calvin would extend the lead behind the serve of senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) to take a 16-4 lead. Calvin would take the set 25-9. The Knights recorded six aces in the first set and freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian), junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) and Laura Danhoff all had three kills. Calvin held the Hornets to a -.015 hitting percentage in the first set.

The Hornets would come out strong in the second set and would take a 10-7 lead. After a Calvin timeout, the Knights would respond with a 6-0 run behind the serve of Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) to take a 13-10 lead. The Knights would not look back from there and take the second set 25-13. Junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) and Laura Danhoff both notched five kills in the second set.

Calvin took the lead early in the third set and would not let it go. Leading 9-4, the Knights would not allow the Hornets to get closer than five points the rest of the set. Freshman Abby Moore (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) recorded her first-career ace at Calvin to give the Knights a 23-10 lead, she then notched her second-career ace to make it 24-10. Calvin would close the set at 25-11 with a kill from Laura Danhoff.

Anna Kamp finished with a game-high 10 kills and Jenna Lodewyk tallied 37 assists. Junior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Keilahna Castillo both recorded eight digs. The Knights recorded 17 service aces on Friday, the most since Sept. 4, 2010, when the Knights also tallied 17 against Mount Union. Keilahna Castillo had a career-record seven aces in the win.

The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to Alma to resume MIAA play against the Scots.
