Box Score

DELAWARE, Oh. - Calvin opened its 2016 season in winning fashion, defeating Capital University 4-1 at the Fred Myers Invitational Friday afternoon on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Senior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) scored pair of first half goals to stake Calvin to an early 2-0 lead. Hooker's first goal came 12:09 into the match as he ripped a shot off the crossbar and then smacked in his own rebound to put the Knights on the board. In the 23rd minute, Hooker redirected a centering pass from sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS) into the back of the net.

Capital (0-1) countered with a goal in the 36th minute to cut the deficit in half leading into halftime.

The Knights took early control in the second half however as senior Isky Van Doorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) lofted a beautiful ball into the box that sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was able to head up and over the Capital goalkeeper. The Vegter goal was the first of his collegiate goal and gave the Knights a 3-1 lead.

Calvin completed the scoring in the 68th minute as senior David Waterson (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) broke free through the left side of the box and tucked a shot just inside the right goalpost.

Calvin finished the game with a 10-7 shots at goal advantage. Junior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) picked up the win for Calvin in goal.

"It was great to get a win right away," said Calvin head coach Ryan Souders. I am proud of each guy on our team. It was a good team result. We certainly have some things we will need to work on but we're happy to get a win away from home against a quality opponent."

Calvin will close out competition at the Fred Meyers Invitational Saturday night at 7 p.m. against host Ohio Wesleyan. The game will feature a meeting of nationally-ranked teams as Calvin is ranked fourth and Ohio Wesleyan 18th.
