Box Score 2 SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Calvin softball team split with the Saint Mary's Belles on Monday afternoon. The Belles took the first game 4-0. The Knights then evened the day with a 6-4 victory in game two. The Calvin bats went off in game two with four homeruns. Calvin is now 14-12 and 4-6 in MIAA action, Saint Mary's moves to 15-12 and 5-3 in MIAA play.
"The team was very resilient today," said Calvin interim head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I feel bad for Anna Gernant in the first game. They only had one hit that was hit well, we just didn't score runs and that is the bottom line. The second game the bats came out, there are not many times you get four homeruns, including two from Lydia Gildea, who continues to score runs.
The Knights and Belles found themselves in a pitching duel in game one. Freshman Anna Gernant and Morgan Raymer dominated the game and made quick work of both lineups.
The Belles broke the tie with a four-run sixth inning to win the game.
Anna Gernant recorded six strikeouts in the loss.
Freshman Rachel Borden led the team with two hits.
The Belles struck first in game two with three runs in the top of the first inning.
The Calvin seniors responded with back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Riemersma crushed the ball over the left-center fence and then Lydia Gildea sent the ball over the right-field fence.
Freshman Maddie DeGroot tied the game with a blast over the left-field fence.
Lydia Gildea broke the tie with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Rachel Borden.
In the fifth inning, Lydia Gildea notched her second homerun of the game with a two-run shot over the right-field fence, scoring Borden.
The Belles cut the Calvin lead with a run in the sixth inning.
Anna Gernant struckout three in the win.
Lydia Gildea had a game-high three hits and four RBI.
The Knights return to action on Thursday when the Knights host Aquinas.
