Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped a 94-86 decision to Aquinas College Saturday evening at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Hope College.
Aquinas (5-5) connected on a tournament record 17 three-point field goals in the win including 11 in the first half as the Saints grabbed a 48-34 halftime lead. Calvin (1-3) clawed back into the game behind strong play underneath as the Knights whittled the Aquinas lead down to six points at 84-78 on a pair of free throws by senior Michael Welch (Stevensville/Lakeshore HS) with 2:34 remaining.
Calvin closed to within five at 91-86 on a three-pointer by junior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) with 41 seconds remaining but Aquinas connected on seven free throws in the final 1:38 of play including five by senior point guard Jake Bullock to seal the win. Calvin led 9-5 early in the game but Aquinas junior Jeremy Williamson connected on three consecutive triples to give the Saints the lead.
Williamson and junior Rob Deiz formed a potent perimeter attack for the Saints as Williamson and Deiz connected on seven three-pointers apiece. Williamson finished with a game-high 25 points while Deiz had 23.
Wilks led Calvin with a career-high 24 points on 9 of 15 shooting while senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) had 19 points, sophomore Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) 13 points and Welch 10 points.
Calvin finished with a 35-33 rebounding advantage but Aquinas was 17 of 26 (.654) from three-point range. Calvin was 23 of 27 (.852) from the free throw line. At the conclusion of the game, Wilks was named to the all-tournament team, marking the first all-tournament citation of his collegiate career.
In Saturday's second game Cornerstone defeated Hope 95-78. Cornerstone's Kyle Steigenga was named the tournament MVP. The all-tournament team consisted of Steigenga, Cory Cox (Cornerstone), Dante Hawkins (Hope), Harrison Blackledge (Hope), Wilks and Williamson (Aquinas).
