No. 1 Volleyball Triumphs Over Trine

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 1 Knights triumphed over Trine on Saturday afternoon, 3-0. The victory keeps the Knights perfect at 16-0 and 10-0 in the MIAA. The Knights took the match, 25-9, 25-17, 25-10. Calvin improved to 35-0 all-time against Trine. Trine falls to 2-17 and 2-8 in MIAA play.

"I thought that we did a good job of serving aggressively today," said head coach Amber Warners. "I am happy with how we played today. We had a lot of players do very well today. We will now have to get ready for a big week."

Calvin made quick work of the Thunder in the first set, taking the set, 25-9. The Knights serving was too much for Trine and Calvin recorded seven aces in the first set. Junior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) had three aces. The Knights had a .517 hitting percentage in the first set, senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) had seven kills.

The Knights jumped to a 7-2 lead behind the serve of sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) and freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian). The Thunder would cut the Knights lead to 16-14, before Laura Danhoff and junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) ended the Thunder run with a block. The serving of Vyletel would break the Thunder and push Calvin to a 22-14 lead. Calvin would go on to take the set, 25-17. Anna Kamp had seven kills for the Knights in the second set.

Emily Blankespoor started the third set with three-straight aces to give Calvin a 6-2 lead. It would be all Calvin from there, Calvin would take the set, 25-10. Emily Blankespoor had four aces in the set, she finished with a career-best six aces.

Laura Danhoff led the Knights with 14 kills, Anna Kamp was one behind at 13 kills. Junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) had a game-high 25 assists, Sarah DeVries had a career-high five assists. Calvin had 15 aces, including six from Emily Blankespoor and four from Kristen Vyletel and Laura Danhoff. Keilahna Castillo notched 16 digs and Kristen Vyletel had 10. Laura Danhoff and Tessa Van Laare both had three blocks.

Calvin is back in action on Wednesday, when the Knights travel to Indiana to face the Belles of Saint Mary's.
