No. 1 Volleyball Remains Perfect at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 1 ranked Calvin volleyball team improved to 23-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory at Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The Knights smacked the Hornets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-12. Calvin remains perfect in MIAA play at 13-0. Kalamazoo falls to 9-17 and 2-12 in MIAA action.

"I am pleased with how we played today," said head coach Amber Warners. "I thought we did a good job of serving aggressively in the second and third sets. Today was a good team victory and we now have to get ready for a busy week, next week."

The Knights got some separation in the first set, leading, 5-4. Calvin went on a 7-1 run behind the serve of senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard). The Hornets would cut the lead to four on three occasions, but the Knights would take the set, 25-20. Freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) and Laura Danhoff both had four kills in the first set.

Calvin jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second set. The serving of Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) proved to be lethal for the Hornets, as Castillo started the set with three aces. Leading 8-3, the Knights went on an 8-1 run to put the set away. The run was aided by two kills from sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) and three aces from junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian). Calvin would go on to take the set, 25-12. The Knights would hit .393 in the second set. Calvin had seven aces in the second set, including three from Jenna Lodewyk and Keilahna Castillo. Junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) had five kills.

The serve of junior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) gave Calvin a 7-0 lead to start the third set. Tessa Van Laare had two kills in the run. Leading 11-4, Calvin would go on a 9-0 run on the serve of Jenna Lodewyk, Sarah Devries had three kills during the run and Lodewyk had three aces. The Knights would win the set, 25-12. Calvin held Kalamazoo to a -.036 hitting percentage in the third set.

Sarah DeVries had a match-high 11 kills for the Knights, Laura Danhoff had 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Jessica Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand River Prep.) recorded her first kill of the season in the third set. Jenna Lodewyk led all players with 32 assists and a career-high five aces. Keilahna Castillo tallied 11 digs.

The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they host Alma at Van Noord Arena.
