Volleyball Comes Up Short against No. 9 Cal Lutheran

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Calvin volleyball team fell to No. 9 Cal Lutheran in the final match of the Emory National Invitational, 3-2. The Knights are now 9-3 on the year and Cal Lutheran improves to 11-2.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early lead in the first set to start the match, Calvin tied the set at four but Cal Lutheran took the next point with a kill from Amanda Roberts and kept the lead the rest of the set, taking the first set, 25-18.

Calvin and Cal Lutheran began the second set exchanging the lead from point-to-point, until the Knights went on a 7-2 run to take an 18-13 lead. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) put away the set with a kill.

The third set saw Cal Lutheran strike back and take the third set, 25-20. Cal Lutheran finished the set on a 5-0 run.

The Knights flexed their muscles in the fourth set with Cal Lutheran trying to close out the match. With Calvin leading, 23-21, Cal Lutheran clawed back to tie the set at 23. Senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) gave the Knights the lead with a kill with the assist going to Jenna Lodewyk. Sophomore Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) finished the set in style with an ace.

In the fifth set, both teams saw the lead to continue to change hands. Maggie Kamp put the ball away twice to give Calvin a 14-13 and 15-14 leads, but Cal Lutheran fought back each time and finished the match off with an attack from Allie Eason, taking the set 17-15.

Maggie Kamp finished the match with 24 kills and 18 digs.  Junior Laura Danoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) recorded 16 kills and 2.5 blocks. Jenna Lodewyk tallied 50 assists in the match and freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) finished with 23 digs.

Maggie Kamp was named to the all-tournament team.

The Knights finished the Emory National Invitational with a 2-2 record. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday as the Knights host Albion at 6:30 at Van Noord Arena.
