Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin College women's soccer team remained undefeated in MIAA action with a 1-0 victory at Albion on Monday afternoon. The Knights were locked in a defensive battle with the Albion Brits when the Knights got on the board late in the 88th minute to improve to 4-2 and 2-0 in conference play.
"Today was another step forward for the team," said head coach Mark Recker. "Albion is a very disciplined team and their goaltender made some amazing saves today. We were able to sustain more pressure in the second half. The defensive unit keeps structuring itself and building. We were able to use our early losses this season as lessons that we have been able to use."
The Knights were lifted by junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian HS) snuck one past the Albion keeper with 2:35 left in regulation. The goal was the fourth goal of the year for Veenstra.
The Knights were anchored once again by a solid defensive performance centered around senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) who tallied her second complete-game shutout of the year and the third shutout of the year for Calvin. The Knights held the Brit offense to only two shots on goal on Monday. The Knights have given up only one goal in the last four matches.
Senior Paige Capel (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) tallied three shots on goal, with senior Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) tallying one shot on goal.
Calvin returns back to action on Thursday as it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field for another important MIAA match.
