NOTRE DAME, IN - On Monday evening, the Calvin College women's basketball team traveled to Notre Dame, Indiana to take on the Belles of Saint Mary's. The conference contest was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Knights defeated the Belles 96-62, improving their record to 23-0 overall and 14-0 in the MIAA. With this victory, Calvin establishes a new school record for consecutive wins, breaking the previous win streak record of twenty-two which was set by the 1995-96 team.
Senior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) scored the first two points of the game and the Knights held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Calvin outscored the Belles 44-30 in the first half and 52-32 in the second.
Seniors Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) and Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) led the Knights in scoring with 17 points apiece; Acre was 7-7 from the floor. Sophomore Anna Timmer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) finished with 14 points and five boards. Breanna Verkaik and junior Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) added 13 and 12 points respectively; Breanna finished with six rebounds while Kally snagged seven. Junior Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) dished out five assists.
On Wednesday night the Knights will host rival Hope College. Hope is a game back in conference standings with a 13-1 MIAA record. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
