Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Knights fell to Cornerstone in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic on Friday night. The Golden Eagles downed the Knights, 103-72. The loss moves Calvin to 2-2 on the year.
"Cornerstone is a really good team," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "This is why we want to play them, they expose things that we are not good at. I was pleased with the first half, but there was no passion or fire in the second half. When a team is more talented and is playing with more passion like Cornerstone was, that is trouble. I feel this won't sit well with the team and we will be ready to go out there tomorrow and build and get better."
The Knights started the night strong taking an early lead. Calvin would take a six-point lead at 18-12, with 11:52 in left in the first half. The Golden Eagles would then go on to show why they are one of the best teams in NAIA Division II, taking a 43-32 lead into halftime. The Knights would periodically chip away at the Cornerstone lead in the second half, but it wouldn't be enough.
Senior Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with 22 points on Friday. Daley also had three rebounds on the night.
Junior Cameron Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) picked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Cornerstone outrebounded the Knights, 39-33.
The Calvin bench tallied 23 points on Friday evening.
The Knights return to the court on Saturday evening as Calvin will face Aquinas College in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Cornerstone. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.
